School Year Opens in Watertown as Students Return to Class

As early morning clouds gave way to increasing sunshine, Watertown students with backpacks over their shoulders returned to school Tuesday, marking the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
Across Watertown, familiar scenes of hugs, smiles, and photos played out as parents and families dropped their children off for the beginning of the school year. Teachers and staff, fresh off their return to work last week, opened the doors and ushered in a new year of learning.
The day began at Watertown Middle School, with students streaming through the doors at 7:30. Many students were greeted by Raider, the Watertown police resource dog.
At the Cunniff School, elementary students ready for the school year hugged parents and family members before their first day. Families were greeted by Larry the crossing guard, who welcomed students back with a smile and a wave as they safely crossed Warren Street.
On the Lowell lawn, teachers held colorful signs allowing students to find them, greeting their new students with a smile and anticipation for the year ahead. Principal Stacy Phelan had the beloved Lowell resource dog, Brady, by her side.
At the Hosmer Elementary School, Watertown’s largest, families and students crowded outside the doors on Concord Road and in front of the Hosmer playground. Students reconnected with friends and shared hugs before teachers welcomed students into the building to begin the year.
At Watertown High School, ninth grade students took part in an orientation as they begin their high school journey. Students learned about life as High Schoolers and were walked through the school’s revolutionary cell phone technology pilot. Students then toured the Moxley campus to familarize themselves with their temporary home for the school year. With the new Watertown High School construction approaching its final stages, students and staff now look ahead to an anticipated move-in date of April 2026.
High School assistant principal Brian Brewer shared a few words of wisdom with students: be where you’re supposed to be when you’re supposed to be there, always do your best, and be nice.
Tuesday marked the first day of school for grades 1-12, with kindergarten beginning on Wednesday, September 3. Preschool and pre-k begins on September 9.
