Welcome to the Watertown Public Schools Human Resources Office
The Watertown Public Schools is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, marital or veteran status, or age.
The Watertown Public Schools Human Resources Department supports the Watertown community, the School Committee and general professional welfare of Watertown Public Schools. We support the building Principals in their responsibility to recruit, hire and retain the most highly qualified professionals. We work hard to develop positive working relationships with the unions representing the employees of the Watertown Public Schools and to support the District through our Human Resources practices.
Watertown supports teachers through comprehensive professional development, and, in particular our new teachers participate in a comprehensive mentoring program. Through these efforts, teachers receive ongoing support toward their licensure, highly qualified status, and evaluation. Watertown is a community of 32,986 in approximately 4.5 square miles seven miles from of the city of Boston and located next to the city of Cambridge. Watertown is a family friendly community committed to the quality of its public schools.
We are a culturally diverse community. There are over 35 different languages spoken in the Watertown Public Schools, with the most common languages being Spanish, Portuguese, and Armenian.
Watertown was founded in 1630 by the English under the leadership of Sir Richard Saltonstall because of its proximity to the Charles River. The town was governed by a Board of Selectmen- the first town in the country to have an official town meeting form of government. Watertown was among the earliest leaders in public education; the first school house was erected here in 1649.
Watertown offers easy access via public transportation, expressways and turnpikes to a wealth of cultural opportunities in and around the city of Boston. Commuters appreciate Watertown's proximity to Logan Airport. Watertown is also within easy driving distance of the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont, the rugged coast of Maine, and the sparkling north and south shore beaches. The area offers a rich selection of museums, universities, medical facilities, performing arts, sports teams, and recreational opportunities.
For more on the history of Watertown, further information can be found on the Town of Watertown website.
