Project Learning Goals

 

This project will help you to master the following skills:

1. Understanding oral history

  1. Why are oral histories valuable
    1. How can we find, recognize and use the rich histories in our own lives
    2. What skills are needed to access and preserve oral history
    3. Why do we continue to value oral history even though we have writing
  2. How are "Cultural Universals" reflected in oral history
  3. Why is authenticity important in oral history
    1. How can we recognize a primary source

2. Working as an Historian

  1. Create a record for posterity
  2. Learn to frame questions and probe
  3. Collect and interpret articfacts and their historic context
  4. Conduct oral history interviews
  5. Maintain objectivity so that people can tell their own stories
  6. Creat a record for posterity
  7. Construct a narrative
  8. Write reflectively
  9. Share work with a learning community

3. Study Skills

  1. Organize work
  2. Do research
  3. Take useful notes
  4. Transcribe interviews
  5. Decide what parts are valuable and important
  6. Create a cohesive story
  7. Meet deadlines
  8. Document through proper bibliography

 

4. Tools and Technology

You will learn to use some of these tools for research, organization, and communication.

  1. Multimedia software like Power Point, Hyperstudio or iMovie
  2. Devices such as digital camera, tape recorder, camcorder and scanner
  3. Internet for research
  4. Word processing

5. Communication Skills

  1. Oral presentation of projects
  2. Use multimedia to communicate effectively
