Substitute Teaching

Watertown Public Schools > Human Resources

Thank you for your interest in substituting at the Watertown Public Schools. Several steps must be completed prior to your first assignment. Please read the following information carefully:

Assignment of a substitute teacher will be made on the basis of the substitute's ability to teach and supervise a specific age group. No substitute shall be employed without consent of the Superintendent or his/her designee and all substitutes must have a college degree unless an exception is made by the Superintendent upon the recommendation on a principal.

The Watertown Public Schools is interested in recruiting and retaining substitute teachers who have a demonstrable interest in teaching and who are able to deliver instruction, in other words to be the teacher for the day.

Our classroom teachers are asked to feedback their impressions of the substitute teacher's coverage of their classroom on the basis of completion of plans, classroom management, and orderliness of the classroom upon their return.

With this and other applicable laws and regulations in mind, the Watertown Public Schools require the following:

Application - Please fully complete the packet. Telephone numbers for your references are required.

Interview - You must have an interview with Personnel or with a Building Principal or Assistant Principal before substitute teaching. Upon receiving your materials, a representative from the Personnel Office may contact you to arrange an .interview

Massachusetts Teaching Certification - Please include a copy (if applicable).

Transcripts - Be sure to enclose copies of your college transcripts or at the very least be able to provide a photocopy of your college degree.

Employment Eligibility - You will need to document employment eligibility through compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 via completion of Form I-9. Form I-9 establishes your identity and your employment eligibility and is a requirement of continued employment.

Criminal Record Check - You will be asked to sign a form giving us permission to run a criminal record check.  No person may have direct, unmonitored contact with children without having completed a Criminal Offenders Records Investigation (CORI).  A negative result on your CORI is not necessarily a disqualification to employment, but further investigation will be required. A copy of the CORI request is NOT available online - you must be physically present to request a CORI.   The CORI can often take as long as 2 weeks or longer.  You will be notified when your CORI is returned, if you are being considered for hire.

Compensation for substitute teaching is $70.00 per diem (per day).  If you are called to substitute for an Instructional Assistant, the per diem is $50.

We do ask you report to your assignment at least 15 minutes before the start of the school day.

Watertown Public School buildings and grounds are smoke free and we are an equal opportunity employer.
