Music during the Encounters in the Americas

Josquin Desprez: - Josquin Desprez was a French/Flemish composer during the Renaissance period (1440-1521). Two excerpts are listed below. Click to hear the music that was in vogue in Europe when millions of Native People in Middle America were dying because of European diseases carried by the Spanish explorers.

William Byrd: - William Byrd was a Renaissance composer from England. He followed Josquin Despres. His music was written between 1543 and 1623. While he was composing, the University of Mexico City was founded by the Spanish (1551). The Spanish had also settled St. Augustine, Florida (1565) and Santa Fe, New Mexico (1609). England made several attempts at building a colony in Virginia. In 1614, Pocahontas married John Rolfe; and in 1620, the Pilgrims began their colony in Plymouth.

Giovanni Bellini: - Bellini was a Venetian Painter. His work on this page was painted between the years 1490 and 1499. During this time, Columbus completed his first voyage to North America (1492); John Cabot sailed to Newfoundland for England (1497); Vasco DA Gama sailed around Africa for Portugal(1498); and Amerigo Vespucci sailed to the west coast of South America for Spain (1499).

Giovanni Bellini: - Click here to see later paintings of Bellini, painted between 1500 and 1509. During this time, Columbus was stranded on a Caribbean island (1504); and Vespucci
explored South America from Venezuela to Argentina (1507).

Giorgione: - This site has examples of the High Renaissance period in Venice (1500-1520). At the end of this period, Hernando Cortes arrive at Tenochtitlan and destroyed the Aztec Empire (1519); Ferdinand Magellan's crew sailed around the world for Spain ((1519-1522); and by 1520, European diseases killed most of Mexico's people.

Sistine Chapel, by Michelangelo: - Click here to view one of the wonders of the Vatican. Michelangelo painted the ceiling while lying on his back. He began the ceiling in 1508 and completed it in 1541. During this time, the first African slaves arrived in the Americas (1510); and Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and saw the Pacific Ocean (1513).

Altarpieces: - This site has pictures of altarpieces, painted by artists from the Netherlands and Spain between 1508 and 1519. During this time, Ponce de Leon was exploring Florida for Spain (1513).

Antwerp Paintings: - This site has examples of paintings completed in the Netherlands between 1509 and 1530). While they were painted, the Spanish built Mexico City in 1521; and Giovanni DAVerrazano discovered New York Harbor and the Hudson River for France (1525).

Paintings from Venice: - Click here to view paintings from Venice and Northern Italy, painted between 1510 and 1560. During this time period, Francisco Pizarro destroyed the Inca Empire in Peru (1531-1533); Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of the St. Lawrence for France (1534-1535); Esteban and Fray Marcos were searching for the Seven Cities of Gold (1536-1539); Hernando de Soto explored the American Southeast for Spain (1539-1542); and Vasquez de Coronado explored the American Southwest in search of the Seven Cities of Gold (1549-1542).

Architectural Works by Michelangelo: - This site has examples of the architectural work of Michelangelo, completed by 1530. He was not just a brilliant painter and sculptor, but he was also an architect.

Titian: - This site has paintings by Titian, a Late Renaissance painter from Venice 1535-1560). While he painted, Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo reached California for Spain (1542); and Spain founded the University of Mexico City (1551).

Venetian Paintings: - Images of Venetian paintings from 1540 - 1585) are included in this site. During the same period, Jean Ribaut started a colony on the coast of South Carolina for France (1562); Fort Caroline was settled by the French in Florida (1564); and St. Augustine Florida was settled by the Spanish (1565).

El Greco: - Click here to see the work of El Greco, a Spanish painter (1570 to 1614). While he painted, England made its two attempts to begin the Roanoke Island Colony off the coast of North Carolina (1585 and 1587).

Orazio Gentileschi: -The work of this Italian artist were painted between 1576 and 1639. During the same time period, Samuel de Champlain was exploring the St. Lawrence River, the coasts of Nova Scotia, New England, and the forests of eastern Canada for France (1603-1615).

Peter Paul Rubens: - Rubens was a Flemish painter. His paintings on this site were done between 1577 and 1640. In 1607, England made its first attempt to settle Jamestown, Virginia.

Frans Hals: - Hals was a Dutch painter. His works included in this site were painted between 1582 and 1666. In 1608, Samuel de Champlain began the settlement of Quebec for France.

Dome of St. Peter's: - Click here to view the Dome of St. Peter's, completed in 1592. It was designed by Michelangelo, but he never got to view his achievement.

Supper at Emmaus: - Click to view this painting by Caravaggio. It was completed completed between 1598 and 1600.

New French and Italian Genres: - Click to view paintings that were considered a different style of painting from other work of the time. The works of art displayed on this site were completed between 1590 and 1700. During this time period, Henry Hudson explored the Hudson River for the Dutch (1609); Santa Fe, New Mexico was found by the Spanish (1609-1610); All but 60 of the 500 settlers in Jamestown died during the Starving Time (1609-1610); Settlers in Virginia planted tobacco for the first time (1612); Pocahontas married John Rolfe in Jamestown (1614); The first African slaves arrived in Virginia (1619); the Virginia House of Burgesses began as the first form representative government for Europeans in the colonies (1619); and the Pilgrims
began their colony in Massachusetts (1620).
