Before the time of Columbus, people told stories about an unknown land in
the ocean between Europe and Asia.

There was only one proven report of a landing in North America before the time of Columbus. That was by a people called the Vikings. The Vikings lived in an area of northern Europe called Scandinavia. From there, the Vikings sailed west and built settlements in Iceland and Greenland. Today, Scandinavia is the countries of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

A saga is an adventure story that tells about the brave deeds of people of
long ago. A story called the Greenlanders' Saga tells of the travels of the
Vikings from settlements in Greenland to the Americas.
